Indian Red Cross Society - District Branch
Committed to humanitarian service for over 100 years
Shri Himanshu Jain, IAS
Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman Red Cross Society Ludhiana
A legacy of humanitarian service connecting global compassion with local action
The Red Cross Movement was founded in 1863 by Jean Henri Dunant, a Swiss humanitarian who witnessed the suffering of wounded soldiers at the Battle of Solferino. His vision was to create an organization that would provide impartial care to the wounded during wartime.
This spirit of compassion echoes the humanitarian work of Bhai Ghanaiya, who served wounded soldiers without discrimination over 300 years ago in Punjab, embodying the same principles of universal service to humanity.
The Indian Red Cross Society was established in 1920 and is one of the largest humanitarian organizations in India. The Punjab State Red Cross Branch was formed in 1925 in Lahore, and after partition, a separate Punjab State Red Cross Branch was established in 1971.
The Ludhiana District Branch has been serving the community with dedication, providing essential services in health, welfare, and emergency relief.
The Red Cross Society operates under a well-defined organizational structure. The Deputy Commissioner serves as the President of the District Branch, ensuring administrative oversight and coordination with government bodies.
The organization is affiliated with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Indian Red Cross Society National Headquarters, maintaining global standards in humanitarian work.

Serving up dignity and inclusion – run entirely by specially-abled individuals
Café S.P.I.C.E. (Specialised Program For Inclusion Confidence Empowerment) is a unique initiative in Ludhiana launched by the District Administration and the Red Cross Society in August 2025. The café is run entirely by specially-abled individuals — including those who are hearing and speech impaired — showcasing their abilities, confidence, and self-reliance. It’s a step towards true inclusion and social empowerment.
The mission of Café S.P.I.C.E. is to promote dignity through work by empowering differently-abled individuals with employment opportunities in hospitality. The vision is to create an inclusive environment where skill, passion, and teamwork take center stage — not disability.
The café is operated by a dedicated team of specially-abled staff who handle cooking, serving, customer interaction. The District Red Cross Society provides training, supervision, and support to ensure smooth daily operations. Every member plays a vital role, proving that ability shines brighter than limitation.
The café was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain at Hambran Road, Ludhiana. It has received appreciation from local officials, NGOs, and the public for demonstrating how inclusive employment can transform lives and attitudes. The initiative has been covered by major media houses including The Indian Express, The Tribune, and The Times of India.
Since its inception, Café S.P.I.C.E. has become a symbol of empowerment — providing livelihood to specially-abled individuals while inspiring many others to rethink inclusion. It offers customers more than just coffee — it serves respect, awareness, and a message that “Ability is greater than disability.”
Support Café S.P.I.C.E. by visiting, spreading awareness, or contributing through the Red Cross Society’s initiatives. Each visit helps sustain employment and empower more individuals with special needs to live independently and confidently.
